Easy Homemade Chili Recipe

This easy homemade chili is made with seasoned ground beef, three kinds of beans, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, plenty of spices, and beef broth. Everything simmers together until you have a thick, rich chili that is perfect for loading up with sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, green onions, and crunchy tortilla strips.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 bell pepper diced
  • 1 jalapeño finely diced (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 15 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 15 oz can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 15 oz can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 15 oz can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup beef broth plus more as needed
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Optional Toppings

  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Sliced green onions
  • Tortilla strips

Instructions

  • Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and jalapeño. Cook for 4–5 minutes until slightly softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess grease if needed.

  • Stir in the tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring until everything is well combined.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, pinto beans, black beans, kidney beans, beef broth, and sugar. Stir until combined.
  • Bring the chili to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chili has thickened.
  • Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed. Serve hot with shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, green onions, and Fritos, if desired.
